These words, scrolling across bumpers in sticker form, are emblems of free speech. No one knows this better than Jennifer Smith.
Jennifer Smith understood that as a government worker she had to tone down her car decorations. The one thing that couldn’t go was her bumper sticker that was a warning to tailgaters.
When her higher-ups told her to remove her bumper sticker or loose her job, she stood her ground and threatened to call her lawyer. It worked. Her bumper sticker and job are both in tact.
Ironically, Jennifer Smith works in Public Health. Obviously her superiors failed to realize that nothing is better for society’s sanity than a good, raucous, laugh.
The FDA recently approved a new birth control called Implanon. It is a lot like other pharmacological birth control methods, female hormones are used to regulate a lady’s monthly cycle; only the lady has no period.
Sounds like a dream, right? Well, it should be noted that despite the variety of women’s cycles (and there is a lot of variety in terms of length, time between, etc) menstruation often does not occur due to an abnormality in the body, be it good (a wanted pregnancy) or bad (starvation). There is no long-term study of what happens to a woman’s body after years of intentionally not menstruating. Of course, it might not cause anything at all, except more frequent and less messy sex.
The other down side is that it is an implant, which is an upside as well. Downer: Norplant, another implantable birth control that has been discontinued, was often difficult to remove (there are some nasty videos of just that floating around the net). Upside: Implanting birth control make it possible to go months to years without having to worry about changing it.
